Formation of Formators: Inspired to take the challenges as opportunities to grow in hope, faith, and charity
The UISG introduces a new series of short videos with a few religious women who are taking part in the Programme for the Preparation of Formators. It offers formation for sisters taking up the responsibility of accompanying those in the initial stages of formation to religious life.
We share the testimony of Sr. Paska, a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
How has your understanding of formation evolved over the past few months?
Being at UISG and attending the Formators’ Course has been a profound experience of personal growth for me, especially in the area of transformation. I believe that God invited me to participate in this course for a reason. At the beginning, I appreciated the relevance of the program and its vision for moving forward. However, as the days unfolded, I increasingly realized how much this course was helping me.
One of the first topics we explored was transformation within group dynamics. Through these sessions, I became aware of the different stages of transformation and discovered that transformation is one of my personal challenges and an area where I need to grow. At first, I understood transformation as a process of disciplining oneself or preparing oneself for mission and life.
However, through the course, I came to a deeper understanding: it is God who takes the initiative in my life. Just as a caterpillar undergoes a gradual process before becoming a butterfly, transformation is often slow and requires patience. I have struggled with my own resistance, fears, and wounds, but I have learned that growth takes time and is part of becoming a better person. I have come to understand that transformation is a lifelong journey.
What is the most important lesson you have taken from this period?
As I continued in the Formators’ Course, I also reflected on the experience of living in an international community. The language differences and the diversity of lifestyles were initially challenging for me. However, as I came to know the sisters better and built relationships within the community, I realized that I needed to let go of my fears and allow myself to feel at home with others. This experience has helped me to understand others more deeply, to collaborate with them, and to recognize how God helps us to understand one another.
Which experience has inspired you to live your vocation with renewed commitment?
In reflecting on my journey, I would especially like to share my experience during the retreat. I identified strongly with Saint Peter, who was impulsive and spontaneous. I recognized those same qualities in myself. Through prayer and the guidance of the spiritual director, I came to understand how Jesus looked upon Peter with love and compassion. This insight helped me to see that Jesus also looks upon me with compassion and love. It enabled me to accept myself more fully and to grow in self-understanding.
This realization has been a precious gift. I know that God continually looks upon me with compassion and love, and I have a deep conviction that God is helping me to become my true self each day of my life. I am ready to continue this journey of transformation and to commit myself even more fully to it.
Programme for the Preparation of Formators runs from January 11 to July 2, 2027.
It is in English and takes place on-site at the UISG seat in Rome.
We already accept application for next year’s edition: for more information and registration
The programme offers various ways to help the participant integrate the content of the programme including personal reflection, group work and interaction, and mentoring. Each participant assumes the responsibility for her own human and spiritual growth and commits herself to active and engaged participation.
