Formation of Formators: Embracing our humanity and the imperfections along the way

Continuing our series of testimonies from participants in the Programme for the Preparation of Formators, we share the experience of Sr. Jana Smutná, a member of the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit.

In this interview, she reflects on the importance of ongoing personal transformation, synodal listening, discernment, and the integration of human and spiritual growth in formation.

How has your understanding of formation evolved over the past few months?

In the very beginning of our classes, I was deeply touched by the quote “transformed people transform others”. It was said by Richard Rohr and I came to realize how important is the ongoing transformation of the formator and that we are still in the process and how important is to welcome this process, to embrace our humanity, to embrace even the imperfections we encounter on our way, on our road. This was really something that touched my heart and I realized that this is also something I need to use in the formation later to help people to recognize their humanity and to welcome it.

I also learned that formation is actually good if we do it in a synodal way, so it's about deep listening, walking together, sharing together. So this was something very important also and I think I can use it also later in future. And also that theology and psychology are interconnected, they are linked together, so we shall not focus only on one aspect but use both aspects in the formation. So this was very important for me.

What is the most important lesson you have taken from this period?

I must say that all lessons were very interesting for me and enriching. It's very difficult to choose just one but I will speak about the lesson of expressive arts because it helped me to see how art can help you even in prayer life.

I started to draw during this formation course and it really helped me to process my emotions and to see new things and it is now for me a very sacred activity.

Which experience has inspired you to live your vocation with renewed commitment?

I enjoyed very much the conversation in spirit when we had classes on synodality and class on discernment. We used this spiritual conversation in small groups and actually I was amazed how discernment can be done this way.

It means in synodal way and this learning of deep listening of myself but also of the other and then together, discerning together, it was something new for me and I think it is a very good way how we can really respect each other and try to find the way together.
