Voices from the 2025 Plenary: “Young people are searching for something greater”
At the conclusion of the 2025 UISG Plenary Assembly, we gather in this section the testimonies and reflections of several Superiors General on the key themes that animated our days of listening, discernment, and communion.
Through these weekly interviews, we wish to open a space of listening and communion, where the experience of those who, from diverse contexts, walk the synodal path in service of the Gospel and consecrated life in today’s world can truly resonate.
This week we share the words of Sr. Chiara CAZZUOLA, Superior General of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, who invites us to overcome stereotypes about young people, recognizing in them an authentic desire for something greater, and calls on adults to be present and credible witnesses of a vocation lived with joy.
"We need to move beyond the standard image of young people as discontented, dependent, aimless, rebellious, lost. Of course, some youth suffer more from adult neglect. Some behaviors are linked to our absence as family figures, educators, etc. But if we look into the hearts of young people—especially young women, who are often more attentive to religious life—we see a deep longing for something greater.
I agree with Don Bosco: vocation spreads through contagion. Who should they turn to? We need to be clearer signs, like John the Baptist pointing to Jesus. Sometimes we lack the courage to propose, even though we’re surrounded by good, kind young people. We need communities that are convinced, serene, and joyful in their vocation. The contagion comes from there—from adults who are happy and have found their path.
We need to propose a model that isn’t outdated. We may need to rethink our methods, but Jesus is eternal, and religious life is too. I have great hope. As Sister Simona Brambilla said earlier, there is indeed a moment of night, if you will. We must recognize the signs of the times—perhaps winter preparing spring—but we need to see the world and young people with more hope".
