Reflections from Sr. Abby Avelino on the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

In recognition of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30, the Union of Superiors General (UISG) had the privilege of interviewing Sr. Abby Avelino, MM, Coordinator of Talitha Kum, to share her reflections on this important day of awareness and action.

A Call to End Human Trafficking

Each year on July 30, the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons calls us to renew our commitment to protecting the dignity and freedom of every person. This day of awareness is a critical reminder that human trafficking remains one of the gravest violations of human rights, with millions suffering worldwide.

According to the International Labour Organization, 50 million people are still living in modern slavery, including forced labor, sexual exploitation, and online exploitation (ILO, 2022). Today, wars, conflicts, and the impact of climate change continue to increase vulnerability to trafficking globally.

At Talitha Kum, the international network of consecrated women dedicated to ending human trafficking, Sr. Abby Avelino sees firsthand the growing crisis. Women and children remain the most affected, making up 70% of trafficking victims, with 1 in 4 being a child (UNODC, 2023).

Responding Through Faith and Action

Talitha Kum is currently promoting a month-long campaign of education, formation, and advocacy, especially in regions like Africa where trafficking is increasing. Sr. Abby calls on church leaders, civic leaders, youth, and all collaborators to join in this mission.

Pope Francis reminds us that “without peace, there is no freedom,” and without peace, we cannot end human trafficking. Conflict and instability lead to displacement, making people vulnerable to exploitation.

How We Can Act Together

  • Educate: Raise awareness and share knowledge to prevent trafficking.
  • Advocate: Urge governments to strengthen laws protecting vulnerable populations.
  • Accompany: Support survivors on their journey to healing and empowerment.
  • Pray: Hold in prayer those affected by trafficking and those working to end it.

A Collective Mission

Through the UISG and Talitha Kum, consecrated women worldwide continue to build networks of hope and action. On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we renew our commitment to ending exploitation and creating a world of freedom and dignity for all.
