Synodality and Collaboration in Communication: A Gathering Toward the MMI General Assembly
On the afternoon of June 6, 2025, over 200 communicators from various religious congregations gathered at the UISG headquarters in Rome and online for a moment of reflection and sharing on the theme of synodality and collaboration in communication. This meeting was part of the journey leading up to the General Assembly of Multimedia International (MMI).
The meeting commenced at 2:30 PM with a welcome from Sr. Patricia Murray, Executive Secretary of the UISG, followed by a prayer highlighting the importance of humble, faithful, and generative communication capable of listening, building bridges, and conveying the beauty of the Gospel with clarity and respect.
Introduced by Fr. Mario Zanotti, General Secretary of the USG, Rev. Prof. José María La Porte—professor at the Faculty of Institutional Communication at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and former consultor of the Dicastery for Communication until 2021—delivered a reflection titled “Synodality and Collaboration Among Communicators.” He emphasized the shared responsibility of those working in ecclesial communication and the urgency of working together with a synodal spirit in a world marked by polarization and misinformation: “It is about integrating governance and communication: identity and spiritual dimension presented strategically in a materialistic and technological context.”
After the presentation, a brief Q&A session was held, allowing communicators present and online to delve deeper into the discussion on institutional communication in consecrated life and the new challenges related to collaboration.
Following a short break, Fr. Hervé Asse, current president of MMI, presented the organization's development, offering a historical overview that facilitated a deeper understanding of the path taken and future challenges.
Subsequently, Fr. Mario Zanotti (USG) and Sr. Patricia Murray (UISG) illustrated the joint support of UISG and USG for this journey, emphasizing how communication represents an essential dimension of the mission of religious congregations today. They also highlighted that, given the complexity of the current cultural and social context, MMI membership is expanding globally, involving not only congregations based in Rome but also those present worldwide.
The second part of the meeting was dedicated to group work (in-person and online) to gather participants' expectations and desires regarding the MMI network and its potential developments. The feedback collected will be shared with the MMI secretariat to be integrated into the preparation of the General Assembly.
Finally, Fr. Hervé presented the modalities of MMI membership, both for individuals and congregations, and announced the next steps toward the General Assembly, scheduled for October 2025, as well as the composition of the new board of directors.
The meeting concluded at 5:00 PM in an atmosphere of collaboration, enthusiasm, and a desire to continue this journey together.
