COP30 – Religious Life Raises Its Voice for Climate Justice: Turning Hope into Action
The UISG, together with the USG and other ecclesial organizations, supports the campaign “Religious Life for Climate Justice: Turning Hope into Action”, an initiative that invites Superiors General to sign a joint statement for a sustainable and just future for all.
The COP30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, is currently taking place in Belém, Brazil (10–21 November 2025). It is a decisive moment for the future of our planet and for our shared commitment to care for our common home.
As religious life, we join the voices of the Churches and peoples calling for a deep ecological conversion that places human dignity, solidarity, and justice at the center.
In our territories, we already see the dramatic effects of an economic system that exploits both the earth and its people: destroyed forests, polluted rivers, and displaced communities.
We reaffirm that without climate justice there is no peace, and without changing our models of development there is no possible future.
The Holy Father’s Message to COP30
In his message to COP30, read by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Pope Leo XIV strongly reminded us:
“If you want to cultivate peace, care for creation.
There is a clear link between peacebuilding and the stewardship for creation.”
The Holy Father calls us to overcome the “collective selfishness” that fuels both armed conflict and environmental degradation, reminding us that the ecological crisis is also a moral crisis.
He urges everyone — governments, communities, young people, and religious organizations — to transform words and reflections into concrete choices and actions grounded in responsibility, justice, and equity.
“Education in integral ecology,” the Pope affirms, “helps us understand that every personal, family, community, and political decision contributes to shaping our common future.”
These words deeply resonate with religious life, which has always sought to unite contemplation and action for the good of humanity and creation.
A Call to Act Together
The UISG invites all Congregations and Institutes of religious life to join this prophetic voice by signing the statement “Religious Life for Climate Justice: Turning Hope into Action” and sharing it with their members and partners.
