Integral Ecology in Family Life: a new Document for the care of Creation and every person

Integral Ecology in Family Life: a new Document for the care of Creation and every person

The Dicasteries of the Holy See for Promoting Integral Human Development and for Laity, Family and Life have published the Document “Integral Ecology in Family Life”, a resource designed to help families live out concretely the care for Creation and human life.

The fruit of a joint effort involving theologians, advisors, and married couples, the Document responds to the calls of Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV to hear the cry of the poor and of the Earth, translating into concrete action the principles of Amoris Laetitia and the encyclical Laudato si’.

In the introduction, the Prefects of the two Dicasteries, Cardinal Michael Czerny and Cardinal Kevin Farrell, highlight the fundamental role of families:
“Values that take shape and grow within the family constitute the fertile ground from which the life of society emerges.” Families are called to be places where self-giving, care, solidarity, and the transmission of faith between generations are learned.

The Document offers practical guidance to address current environmental challenges and to promote integral human development. After an introductory section, the core of the text is structured around seven themes inspired by Laudato si’:

  • hearing the cry of the earth
  • hearing the cry of the poor and the vulnerable
  • promoting an ecological economy
  • adopting sustainable lifestyles
  • education for integral ecology
  • ecological spirituality within the family
  • participation of families in community life

Each chapter includes explanations, reflections, and concrete actions, making the Document accessible not only to families, but also to Church groups and all those committed to building a more just and sustainable world.

As Pope Leo XIV recalled, faith is passed on within the family “from generation to generation,” making care for Creation an integral part of Christian life.
