7th Week of Easter: Transformed by Hope
“Transformed by Hope” is proposed as a space of listening and discernment on the Sunday Gospels that accompany our journey.
This initiative is situated within the horizon opened by the Jubilee and seeks to extend its grace, continuing to live our vocation as pilgrims of hope amid the challenges of our time.
Each week, in the light of the Word of God, we contemplate an aspect of the conversion to which we are called, allowing ourselves to be guided by the Spirit.
In the Seventh Week of Easter, the reflection on the Gospel according to John (Jn 17:1–11) is entrusted to Sr. Theresia Supriyati sjmj, Superior General of the Sisters of Jesus Mary Joseph.
Knowing You More Deeply: From Small Steps to Greater Strides
I was deeply touched by the Gospel of the 7th Sunday of Easter (John 17:1–11a), especially by verse 3: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”
One word particularly touched my heart: “know.”
In daily life, people often seek to know one another. Sometimes this knowledge remains superficial: knowing a person’s name, congregation, work, or hobbies. It is an informative kind of knowing. But in today’s Gospel, Jesus reveals a much deeper meaning of “knowing.” He speaks of a relational knowing — a communion of life and love.
Jesus knew deeply that He was sent by the Father to bring eternal life to the world. For Him, eternal life meant living in complete union with the Father. Everything Jesus did — meeting the disciples, welcoming children, listening to the poor, healing the sick, accompanying the marginalized — flowed from this intimate relationship with the Father. His entire mission was to glorify the Father so that others, too, might come to know Him.
This Gospel speaks profoundly to our consecrated life in mission. As consecrated persons, we are called not only to speak about God, but to live in deep communion with Him so that our lives become a witness of His love. Our mission is rooted in relationship: relationship with God and with the people we serve. Pope Francis, in Evangelii Gaudium, reminds us not to live isolated or elitist lives, but to go forth courageously, leaving our comfort zones to accompany people in their struggles, especially the poor and marginalized. Through compassionate presence, attentive listening, and humble service, we become signs of hope for those who feel abandoned or discouraged.
Dialog in Daily Living
Today, I also see a sign of hope emerging from this Gospel in the growing spirit of dialogue and fraternity in our world. In our societies, we live among people of different cultures and religions. Through daily encounters, interreligious dialogue, mutual respect, and shared concern for humanity, we take small steps toward peace and understanding. Pope Leo XIV continually calls for peace, dialogue, and respect for human dignity, condemning violence and the misuse of religion. His appeals encourage us to become builders of reconciliation and hope.
A small step can become the beginning of a greater stride
In our daily mission, by walking alongside our brothers and sisters with openness and compassion, we help reveal God’s presence in the world. Through these simple acts of love and dialogue, people may come to know more deeply the only true God, who is the source of eternal life.
