World Mental Health Day: Listening, Welcoming and Caring

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, observed on 10 October, Sr Idília María Moreira G. Carneiro, Superior General of the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, shares a reflection on the importance of placing the person at the centre, recognising their dignity and fostering a culture of listening and care.

Mental health is a fundamental dimension of human life and a shared responsibility that concerns society as a whole. In a world where so many people experience psychological suffering, loneliness and exclusion, there is an increasingly urgent need to build communities that welcome, accompany and recognise the value of every human life.

In her message, entitled "Caring for and Serving Life: The Heart of Hospitality", Sr Idília highlights the charism of hospitality as a concrete expression of Gospel compassion. Drawing on the experience of the Hospitaller Sisters, present in 25 countries, she emphasises the importance of overcoming stigma and promoting a more humane and inclusive society.

This reflection is in harmony with Pope Leo XIV’s prayer intention for the month of October, dedicated to pastoral care for mental health. In the video accompanying this intention, the Pope invites us to pray that the Church may increasingly become an open home, able to welcome and accompany those experiencing psychological suffering.

The UISG invites you to read and share Sr Idília's message, an appeal to recognise mental health care as a concrete commitment to human dignity and to building more attentive and compassionate communities.
