COP27 Preparations

The news from UNANIMA International in UNANIMA September 2022 Newsletter about COP27.

This year, the 27th annual United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) will take place from November 7 – 18, 2022, in Sharm-El-Sheik, Egypt. The ‘Parties’ are signatories to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a treaty signed by 197 Parties (196 countries and the EU).

The first COP took place in Berlin in 1995, and it is the UNFCCC’s supreme decision-making body on climate change matters. The upcoming COP27 will be significant in terms of getting Member States to commit to urgently needed climate change mitigation efforts and emissions decreases. Members of Civil Society, like UNANIMA International, will pay specific attention to the inclusion of marginalized groups in decision-making and participatory processes at COP27.

In addition to attending week 2 of COP27 in person, UNANIMA International will be co-organizing a side event along with the Carmelite NGO, Boston College, VIVAT International, the Society of Catholic Medical Missionaries - Medical Mission Sisters (MMS), International Young Catholic Students (IYCS international), Catholic Relief Services – U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (Farmers), and Catholic Youth Network for Environmental Sustainability in Africa (CYNESA). UNANIMA International will speak to the connections between environmental concerns, homelessness, and women & children as part of a round table led by the Carmelites. More information on UNANIMA International’s environmental advocacy and involvement is forthcoming.
