On the occasion of the 11th World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, celebrated on 1 September 2026, Pope Leo XIV invites the Church and the world to recognize the profound connection between peace, care for creation, and conversion of heart. The chosen theme — “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks” (Is 2:4) — draws on Isaiah’s prophetic vision, in which instruments of war are transformed into tools that sustain and nurture life.

The Holy Father begins by contemplating life as a gift from God and recalls the common Christian vocation to build a civilization of love. Faced with the many crises affecting our world today, the Pope emphasizes that human suffering and the destruction of the harmonious balance of creation are not separate realities: “They constitute a single cry for healing and peace rising from a wounded world.”

In particular, Pope Leo XIV draws attention to the consequences of war, which extend far beyond the battlefield. Conflicts claim lives, tear families apart, force millions of people from their homes, and leave deep social and ecological wounds. The destruction of ecosystems, the contamination of air and water, and food insecurity can, in turn, fuel poverty, inequality, and new social tensions. War therefore wounds not only people, but the entire fabric of life and humanity’s relationship with creation.

For the Pope, this crisis cannot be addressed solely through political or structural solutions. At its roots lies a moral and spiritual crisis that challenges the human heart. Violence, injustice, and environmental degradation point to a deeper imbalance, marked by the desire for domination, the pursuit of immediate profit, the loss of a sense of limits, and the inability to recognize the dignity of every human person.

Echoing the words of Pope Benedict XVI — “The external deserts in the world are growing, because the internal deserts have become so vast” — Pope Leo XIV therefore emphasizes the need to combine the transformation of structures with a genuine conversion of heart. What is wounded around us often reflects the divisions and conflicts that also dwell within the human heart.

The prophetic call to “beat swords into plowshares” thus becomes an appeal addressed not only to nations and their leaders, but to each one of us. It means learning to transform what generates destruction into something that protects and sustains life. Such a transformation, the Pope reminds us, requires cooperation with God’s grace and a personal and collective conversion capable of renewing our desires, relationships, and choices.

From this perspective, care for creation becomes an integral part of building peace. Peace begins in the heart and becomes visible in our relationships, our communities, and the way we care for the earth. When the heart is renewed, even what was intended for destruction can be redirected towards life, the care of the poor, feeding the hungry, and safeguarding creation. This, the Holy Father emphasizes, is the path of authentic ecological conversion.

Pope Leo XIV therefore invites us to imagine a world in which the immense energies and resources currently devoted to war could instead be used for integral human development, overcoming poverty, defending human dignity, reconciliation among divided peoples, and caring for our common home. This vision does not arise from naïveté, but from faith in the coming of the Kingdom of God.

The true instruments for building peace, the Pope reminds us, are not weapons of destruction, but rather “truth, dialogue, patience, kindness, justice, mercy, understanding, care and love.” These are the instruments capable of transforming individuals, renewing communities, and helping to heal the wounds of our world.

As we celebrate this 11th World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, Pope Leo XIV’s message invites us to safeguard together the different “ecosystems” entrusted to us by God: creation, human relationships, and the human heart itself. Caring for the earth also means building relationships of peace; working for peace means learning to protect and nurture life in all its forms.

Finally, the Holy Father entrusts this journey of transformation to the responsibility of each one of us. From desert to garden, from division to communion, and from violence to peace: this is the path we are called to follow, so that, in our own time, swords may truly be beaten into plowshares and the peace of Christ may reign over all creation.
