Walking Together Toward Peace: The Ongoing Mission of Solidarity with South Sudan

Fr. Zaoro Hyacinthe Loua, SJ, a Jesuit priest from Côte d’Ivoire, currently serves as the New Executive Director of Solidarity with South Sudan, a collaborative missionary initiative of the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USG). With extensive experience working alongside communities affected by conflict, Fr. Loua is deeply committed to fostering reconciliation, peace, and integral human development through education and community empowerment.
Mission Continuity and Reconciliation

South Sudan, a nation burdened by years of civil war, remains a land of great need and profound hope.

The mission of Solidarity with South Sudan continues to be one of accompaniment—standing with the people and leaders alike to build a culture of living together in peace. Despite ongoing violence in some regions, our commitment as missionaries is unwavering: to help South Sudanese communities find pathways toward reconciliation and lasting harmony.

The recent pastoral letter issued by the bishops of South Sudan, calling for renewed dialogue and reconciliation, deeply resonates with our mission. As a shared initiative of UISG and USG, Solidarity with South Sudan dedicates itself to walking alongside the people on their challenging journey toward peace.

Education and Peace: Foundational Challenges

Education stands out as one of the most pressing challenges in South Sudan. Conflict and displacement have forced many families to flee, leaving those who remain with limited access to quality education and essential services. This gap is particularly urgent in healthcare, where the need for well-trained professionals is critical to community well-being.

Peace, too, remains fragile and elusive. Our mission is not only to encourage dialogue but also to empower communities to rebuild trust and hope, creating a foundation where peace can take root and flourish.

Signs of Progress and Community Collaboration

Since its inception, Solidarity with South Sudan has witnessed encouraging progress. Communities are increasingly engaged in our mission’s work, and local bishops have sought our support in training catechists and community leaders who serve as vital pillars within Christian communities. These leaders are instrumental in guiding their people spiritually and socially.

While the path remains difficult and many challenges persist, these positive developments affirm the vitality and effectiveness of our mission. Solidarity with South Sudan warmly welcomes sisters, brothers, and lay professionals who feel called to join this transformative work.

Key Projects: Trauma Healing, Farming, and Teacher Training

  • To meet South Sudan’s complex realities, Solidarity with South Sudan focuses on three critical projects:
  • Trauma Healing: Addressing the deep emotional and spiritual wounds caused by years of conflict through targeted healing programs.
  • Farmer Training: Educating local farmers to enhance agricultural productivity, thereby improving food security and community sustainability.
  • Teacher Training: Preparing teachers who will educate and inspire the youth, laying the groundwork for a peaceful and just society.

A Call to Mission

As we continue this vital mission, I extend an invitation to all who feel called by God’s service to consider joining us in South Sudan. Your prayers, presence, and support are invaluable as we accompany the people of this nation toward reconciliation, peace, and hope.
