 Trafficking in women and Children:

A Violation of Women’s Basic Human Rights

A communique issued by the Nigerian Conference of Women Religious at the end of a One-Week Training Workshop on Counter Trafficking in Women and Children, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, which took place at Our Lady of  Theme: Trafficking in women and Children: A Violation of Women’s Basic Human Rights.

We, the Women Religious of Nigeria are conscious of the fact that Jesus came that we may have life and have it to the full. We are pained that so many women and children are deprived of this fullness of life Through Human trafficking.

“Slavery, Prostitution, selling of Women and children and the disgraceful working conditions where people are treated as instrument of gain rather than free and responsible persons as ‘infamies’  which poison human society debase their perpetrators and constitute a supreme dishonour to the Creator” (Gaudium et Spes)

We are  aware that these ‘Sisters’ of ours are subjected to inhuman treatment and conditions. They are forced into the Sex Industry and used as cheap labour. They are physically abused and psychologically traumatized. They are exposed to health risks sexually transmitted diseases and even killed.

We strongly condemn these violations of human rights of women and children and recommit ourselves to addressing this issue urgently by creating awareness through Education and information at the grassroots level to prevent further victimization, to rescue and protect and reintegrate survivors of women trafficking.

We are aware of the fact that we cannot do this alone and so we invite all stakeholders on the National and International Levels to wage war against this 21st Century Slavery, so as to restore the dignity of the Woman.

We are pleased to know that the Nigerian Government has signed and ratified the UN Protocol, to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons especially woman  and children. We therefore call on our Government to fully implement this protocol in order to liberate our women and bring to book the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
