GENERAL SECRETARY

The General Secretary is appointed by the Executive Committee. Her mandate is for three years, renewable once. She participates in all meetings of the Executive Committee, but without the right to vote.

The General Secretary:

  • assists the President and Executive Committee in carrying forward the mission, vision and goals of the Union;
  • directs, coordinates and oversees the ongoing administration of the Union (including its international headquarers and staff;
  • represents the Union in designated external forums.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  • works in collaboration with the President, Executive Committee, Office Manager and other members of the staff in managing organizational functions and in responding to situations, events and trends as they arise;
  • develops administrative policy and alerts the President and Executive Committee to policy needs;
  • Initiates, coordinates and oversees, either directly or through associates, processes of adminstration: plannning, program implementation, communication, organizational procedures and functions;
  • oversees development and completion of programs to achieve the UISG mission and goals;
  • serves as secretary to the Executive Committee and follows through on pertinent business and correspondence;
  • oversees legal issues;
  • manages Assembly and Plenary meetings;
  • directs research projects, either personally or through assoicates;
  • bears primary responsibility for continuing formation of the staff;
  • coordinates media relations for UISG;
  • oversees print and electronic communications;
  • drafts press releases and public statements as needed and acts as spokesperson when requested to do so by the President or Executive Committee;
  • networks with other organizations with similar aims;
  • oversees selection of and access to archival material in collaboration with the Archivist;
  • provides other assistance as required or as requested by the President of the Executive Committee.
