DECLARATION FROM NAIROBI ASSEMBLY

WOMEN DISCIPLES TOGETHER BRINGING TO BIRTH A CULTURE OF PEACE

As delegates to the UISG Assembly 2002, we came to Nairobi, Kenya,
meeting for the first time outside of Rome
as a sign of solidarity with religious in Africa.
We are grateful for the warmth and hospitality of the Kenyan people.
We rejoice in the dynamism of the Kenyan Church.

We are inspired by the responses of the various constellations to the
2001 Declaration in which we comitted ourselves to work for a culture of peace.
We are encouraged by the growing solidarity among us
in our common movement forward.
We recognize that networking has increased among us
as a means to furthering our goals.
We have shared our projects and thus experienced the power
of women working with women.

We are deeply touched by the cries
of oppressed women and children around the world.
We have experienced a growing sense of new vitality in religious life.
As women disciples of Jesus, we respond with prophetic hope and courage.

We recommit ourselves to the 2001 Declaration:
We shall go forward using every possible means to work with
and on behalf of women and children.
We shall promote the holistic education of sisters for service as well as
formation for transformation of ourselves and of our world.
We shall bring our objectives and concerns to regional and national
conferences of religious, to the UN and other organizations
working toward the same goals.

We shall establish a UISG website for communication and networking.
We shall encourage twinning and other forms of collaboration
within and among constellations.

The dream of one woman alone might remain utopian;
the dream of many women together becomes prophecy;
the dream shared within and among constellations becomes a reality.
