Three UISG presidents elected

(Rome, May 14, 2007) Three presidents will lead the UISG (International Unions of Superiors General) during the next three years. Each of the three presidents will lead for a year until the 2010 UISG Plenary.

The decision was made during the UISG Assembly held from May 11-13, 2007 at the UISG Offices in Piazza di Ponte S. Angelo, 28 in Rome.

The three presidents elected on May 13 include,  Sr. Amelia Kawaji, (Mercedarian Missionary Sisters of Berriz); Sr. Louise Madore FDS, (Daughters of Wisdom), and Sr. Maureen Cusick, (Sisters of Our Lady of Zion). They were chosen from the eight members of the Executive Board who were earlier elected by the 53 delegates present.

Other members of the Executive Board are: Sr. Viviana Ballarin OP, Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena; Sr. Ma. Soledad Galerón RMI, Religious of Mary Immaculate; Sr. Carol Regan, Sisters of the Holy Union of the Sacred Hearts; Sr. Therezinha Joana Rasera SDS, Sisters of the Divine Saviour; and, Sr. M. Carola Thomann, the Franciscans Sisters of God.

Two sisters were also elected as substitutes.

The  UISG Assembly was held after  2007 UISG Plenary.  Fifty three  delegates of the different constellations or continental groupings met to make specific decisions in order to implement the directions and commitments set by the larger Plenary Meetings. While one of the most notable activities of the Assembly is the election of the UISG President and the Executive Committee, other important decisions are made as well.

The delegates of the 2007 UISG  Assembly voted unanimously that they want to vote as a “whole”  the Articles and Statutes as amended  and that they empower the Executive Board to make adjustments and corrections according to the spirit of the Assembly.

The first assembly was held in Rome on March 1-12, 1967. Only two assemblies were held outside of Rome-- in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002 and in Warsaw, Poland in 2005.

The Plenary is held every three years and the  Assembly every year one and a half years.
